Eccolo / PMW dinner with Angelo Ferrio: Monday, June 20

Angelo Fierro in his cantina.
Angelo Ferrio in his cantina.

Our next wine dinner with Eccolo restaurant in Berkeley is Monday June 20th. Our special guest this time is Angelo Ferrio of Cascina Ca' Rossa, one of the top producers of arneis, barbera, and nebbiolo in the Piemonte's Roero (the region just north of Barolo - see a map here). Angelo is a true Roero personaggio who makes wines of charm and vivacity that match his own.

Chef Christopher Lee will prepare a special menu to accompany a delicious and informative selection of Angelo's wines. You will be able to order both food and wine à la carte. Prices for first courses are typically in the $7-14 range and for main courses $15-$33. All wines will be available by the 2-ounce pour, 6-ounce glass, and bottle.

These are the wines that we've helped select for the dinner:

2004 Arneis 'Merica'
2003 Barbera normale
2001 Barbera 'Mulassa'
2001 Roero 'Audinaggio' (nebbiolo)
1999 Roero 'Audinaggio'
2004 Birbét (frizzante dessert wine)

Many of us from Paul Marcus Wines are attending the dinner, and we'll be available - as will Angelo - to answer questions that you have about the wines. Angelo's importer and distributor, the Vinity Wine Company, will provide printed information sheets about Ca' Rossa and the wines as well.

Stop into the store to ask us about Ca' Rossa. If you would like to make reservations or have questions about the dinner, call Eccolo at 510.644.0444. Eccolo's address is 1820 Fourth Street, Berkeley, California. For more information, see http://www.eccolo.com/

Slow Food San Francisco's Golden Glass tasting: Saturday, June 18

Slow Food San Francisco is sponsoring a tasting of some of the best terroir wines of Italy this Saturday afternoon at Fort Mason in San Francisco. There's also a seminar beforehand and a dinner at Acquerello on Sunday.

Many Italian producers whose wines we sell will be represented at the tasting, including Bastianich (Friuli), Cascina Ca' Rossa (Piemonte), Filippo Gallino (Piemonte), Accademia dei Racemi (Puglia), Felsina (Toscana), Arnaldo Caprai (Umbria), and Ruggeri (Veneto). Filippo Gallino, Angelo Ferrio from Cascina Ca' Rossa, and other producers of some of our favorite wines are coming from Italy to pour their wines and discuss them with you.

Visit the Golden Glass Web site for more information and to order tickets: http://thegoldenglass.com

Eccolo / PMW dinner with Aldo Vacca: Friday, September 16

Here's some advance notice about an Eccolo/PMW wine dinner for a change! It looks like Aldo Vacca from I Produttori del Barbaresco will be in town in September, and we're tentatively planning to have him join us on September 16th at Eccolo for a special dinner featuring the fabulous, traditional Barbarescos from this renowned producer. The date is tentative, and we'll let you know more as September approaches.

The next PMW newsletter: The Roero, and Paul C's European trip

A full-blown newsletter will be coming to an e-mail box near you very soon. Mark is working on an article about the Roero, and Paul C will muse on "authentic experience" during his recent trip to Spain, France, and Switzerland.
